Your Guide to the Local Jazz Scene
Originally from Detroit, Michael Hudson-Casanova is a saxophonist, composer, and improviser quickly becoming a staple in Chicago’s jazz and creative music scene. He has appeared both as a bandleader and sideman across the United States at venues such as South Jazz Kitchen, Green Mill, Cliff Bell’s, and many more. His music blends traditional and modern jazz concepts, always leaving plenty of room for dynamic improvisation with carefully chosen bandmates. In October of 2022, Hudson-Casanova was featured as a soloist with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra for their production of “Charlie Parker: With Strings.”
Hudson-Casanova’s most recent album, Animus, was released on Passerine Records in 2023, and received support from Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and the Illinois Arts Council Agency. The album features his trio with established Chicagoans Gustavo Cortiñas and Erik Skov, with special guest James Davis. His self-produced debut album, Echoes of Thought (2021), features a sextet of longtime collaborators playing original music and improvisations inspired by Wayne Shorter’s six-piece bands.
Hudson-Casanova is a graduate of Temple University and Western Michigan University’s music programs. Since beginning his work as a professional musician in 2012, he has found success in a great variety of musical situations including small and large jazz ensembles, classical and new music ensembles, and artistic collaborations with dance and multimedia artists.
